වත රතු මල් කොහා (Red faced Malkoha)

One of the members of “Birds feeding flock / Mixed feeding flock” at Sinharaja Rain forest. It occupies the highest layer of the canopy and has a weak flight. A painting of Red faced Malkoha can be spotted at the image house of “Kotte Buddhist Temple” evidencing it was existed in Colombo nearly 200 years ago. But currently its habitat is restricted to wet zone evergreen forests such as Sinharaja & Kithulgala.

We were lucky to have a close encounter of a couple of Malkohas and managed to capture few of images during the recent birding tour at Sinharaja Rain forest. (October 2025)
